do I make myself a blessing to everyone I meet?

This is part of a line in one of Brandi Carlile’s newest songs, “That Wasn’t Me.”  I love this line…it makes me stop and examine my actions, my words , my thoughts. Do I want to contribute kindness to the world? Yes without a doubt. To be honest I can’t always do it. I have moments, days where my compassion is hard to find and I can say angry words and have angry thoughts that create further discord.  But I learn from these moments and learn to forgive myself as I continue to learn what compassion is, what it does, what love is, what forgiveness is…I think it would be an amazing idea to teach young adults..instead of what can I get but do I make myself a blessing to everyone I meet. Wouldn’t it be great if our politicians could ask themselves this very question?

I started writing this tonight with the intent to talk about the awesome show Brandi and the boys put on in Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom , NH last night.  Loved it all, loved the energy.  A show like last night feeds my soul, inspires me and just gets me jumpin’ and rockin’.  I am drawn to artists like Brandi & Michael Franti & Xavier Rudd because their message is about humanity, about love, and speaking up for injustices.  You can tell when musicians love what they do and Brandi, Phil, Tim & the boys were loving the crowd in NH last night. Thank you to them all.  I already have my ticket to see Brandi in Mass. in October.

Emmylou Harris Turns Nashville Estate into Animal Shelter

Emmylou Harris is the “Queen of Country.” She has been topping the charts with incredible award-winning music for almost 4 decades. Now she is doing more than rocking the country world. She has become a rock star for animals in need.

The country singer has turned her Nashville estate into a shelter for unwanted pets. She decided to rescue and adopt multiple animals after rescuing her dog hours before he was to be euthanized. Harris decided to “make it her mission to save animals facing the same fate.” So she created Bonaparte’s Retreat and turned part of her home into a shelter.

There are 29 dogs in the program on her estate currently. Ten of which live happily in her backyard. A website has been set up for the organization which describes each of the adoptable pets at the retreat and approximately how old they are.

The mission of Bonaparte’s Retreat reads: “Bonaparte’s Retreat is dedicated to providing nurturing foster care for shelter dogs when their allotted time at the shelter has elapsed. Our mission is to prevent these wonderful animals from being euthanized and to place them in permanent, loving homes.”

Harris isn’t stopping at just a retreat on her estate for animals in need. She is continuing her pet projects by working on “Crossroads Campus”, a project that will pair animals in need with people and also provide financial and emotional support.

XAVIER RUDD – “FOLLOW THE SUN” LYRICS

Follow, follow the sun
And which way the wind blows
When this day is done
Breathe, breathe in the air
Set your intentions
Dream with care
Tomorrow’s a new day for everyone
A brand new moon and brand new sun

So follow, follow the sun
The direction of the birds
The direction of love
Breathe, breathe in the air
Cherish this moment
Cherish this breath
Tomorrow’s a new day day for everyone
A brand new moon, brand new sun

When you feel life coming down on you like a heavy weight
When you feel this crazy society adding to the strain
Take a stroll to the nearest water’s edge, remember your place
Many moons have risen and fallen long, long before you came
So which way is the wind blowing
What does your heart say

So follow, follow the sun
And which way the wind blows
When this day is done

Masterfully delicate, Follow The Sun is the essence of Xavier Rudd’s spiritual connection to this world: his humble understanding that everything was here before us and will remain long after we are gone, and that every day is a new gift to cherish and to respect.

As a song-writer, Xavier Rudd has always been able to place complex ideas into heartfelt words with a universal simplicity. Having covered vast musical ground with his previous albums, Follow The Sun is the familiar sound of Rudd’s earlier work as an ambidextrous solo artist. His voice, his guitar and his message; carried along with gentle rhythms and musical textures.

Beautifully organic and understated, Rudd’s delivery of Follow The Sun is a reiteration of the song’s theme that no matter what our religion or our blood lines are in this world, taking a moment or a breath, to respect and acknowledge the flow of energy around us, is vital nourishment for our own souls.

Follow The Sun invites us to leave our own distractions – the congestion of thoughts that keep us locked in our minds every waking minute – and to not let each day pass us by. To take notice and be thankful of the beauty of our great mother and our connection to her. That the most overlooked of things – each day’s sun and moon, the winds and the tides, the creatures that fill our skies and oceans… that these things are the truth. They are conduits of an ever-flowing energy that society teaches us as humans to disconnect from, when in fact they are the things we need to be connected to the most.

To celebrate its release, Rudd will launch Follow The Sun with a tour of Australia and New Zealand; winding his way around the country to catch up with friends, catch a few waves, and reconnect with his fans in person, from the stage, where he belongs.
