A Meditation on Gratitude and Joy

With gratitude I remember the many blessings in my life: the people, animals, plants, and insects — creatures of the sky and sea, air and water, fire and earth;

With gratitude I remember the Earth that holds and sustains all life;

With gratitude I remember the care and labor of the generations of elders and ancestors who came before me;

With gratitude I remember the teachings and lessons I have been given and that I have experienced in my life;

With gratitude I hold in my heart my family and friends, my local and global community;

With gratitude I accept my measure of health and well-being and the strength I experience of mind and body;

With gratitude I accept the gifts I have to give — my presence, my knowledge and wisdom, my talents and resources;

With gratitude I am thankful for the life I have been given.

a breathing meditation

Dear Brave Souls: For you, a breathing meditation.

In your heart, go to the most beautiful tidal water you can recall, enter it– it is just the right temperature… and there, in ancient Mother Ocean, bend to curve your waters to roll and recede, roll and recede in waves.

Breathe in, recede,
then hold breath for a moment…
then Breath out, roll forward
with longest breath you have.
Calm bright heart.

Breathe in, recede,
then hold breath for a moment…
then Breath out, roll forward
with longest breath you have.
Calm bright heart.

Be reminded this is the child’s natural rhythm for self calming. Remember, you are a child of the Waters from your conception forward, and be calmed. You were conceived in, carried in the waters for nearly a year and you could breathe in total calm in those waters.

Breathe in, recede,
then hold breath for a moment…
then Breath out, roll forward
with longest breath you have.
Calm bright heart.

Breathe in, recede,
then hold breath for a moment…
then Breath out, roll forward
with longest breath you have.
Calm bright heart.

And with love,
dr.e

what matters most…

“In the end these things matter most: How well did you love? How fully did you live? How deeply did you let go?” — Buddha

without harshness…

It is only when we begin to relax with ourselves that meditation becomes a transformative process. Only when we relate with ourselves without moralizing, without harshness, without deception, can we let go of harmful patterns. Without maitri (metta), renunciation of old habits becomes abusive. This is an important point.” ~Pema Chödrön

If Only

If  Only

If only the pain in my shoulder

Would go away

I could meditate properly

If only they would shut  that window

I wouldn’t hear the trucks roaring to take

someone their beer

then I could maintain my focus

If only I had chosen the other cushion

Then I could sit properly

And meditate the right way

If only that person would stop sniffling

and that other person would stop fidgeting

Then I could meditate the right way

If only I wore a different shirt today

Then I would be a good meditator

This one doesn’t fit right

and the stripes are going the wrong way

If only I was three inches taller

I could meditate the right way

If only…oh there’s those thoughts again

Breathing out, letting go, breathing in

If only…

I wish they’d ring that damn bell.

-I wrote this after a particularly difficult meditation session….I struggled with myself over and over. Fortunately I have had the opportunity to do some lengthy retreats and I have learned over and over that there is really nothing to struggle against except myself. there is no reason to hold on and hold back..when i can let go life becomes  easier even when i can let go into pain…it is still difficult but I don’t have the added suffering of fighting myself, judging myself for what I feel or think. It is a lesson I continue to learn and relearn..such is the human experience…enlightenment happens moment to moment.
